Key Verse: Proverbs 25:28 “Whoever has no rule over his own spirit is like a city broken down, without walls.” For many years this has been one of my favorite proverbs. It is a reminder of the importance of self control. Solomon illustrates the importance of self control by getting the reader to picture a big beautiful city, and then he tells the reader to imagine that the city has no wall around it. In ancient times a wall served as perhaps the most effective defense against invading enemies. The higher and thicker the wall the more effective it served as protection for the people. A city that had no walls was a city that was in constant danger. It was a city that the enemy could overrun and pillage at any moment. It had little defense if an attack arose. Similarly, the Christian who lacks self control is one who has very little defense when the enemy comes and tempts him. Just like the city without walls is destined for defeat, destined to be ruled by another, the Christian who lacks self control will be ruled by their passions, emotions, and the enemy. Self control is necessary for us to successfully reflect the character of Christ in our life. Self control is one of the fruit of the Spirit. We must consistently abide with Christ, and allow the Holy Spirit to produce this fruit in our daily lives. If you’re reading this and struggling with self control, struggling with sin, and feel as if there is no hope, I want you to remember that God loves you, and there is victory if you abide in Christ. Call out to Him today, and He will hear and work in the midst of your situation!
