Can You Tell Others to Imitate You? - 1 Corinthians 4:16

By Pastor J.J. | September 14, 2026
Key Verse: 1 Corinthians 4:16

“Therefore I urge you, imitate me.”

It has always been both astounding and convicting that Paul would say something like this in his letters. He actually says it multiple times. “Therefore I urge you, imitate me.” This is a very bold thing to say. However, Paul’s attitude is not one of arrogance, rather it was one of confidence He is confident in his own pursuit of Christ. He is not stating that He is perfect, rather he is simply saying that to the best of my knowledge I’m living like Jesus. I am doing my best to imitate Christ, so if you imitate me you will also be imitating Jesus. Friend, how are you doing in imitating Jesus? A good way to answer this question is to honestly answer the following question. If you told others to imitate you, would they imitating Jesus? If the answer is no, that means that you are living in sin, and there are things that you need to change in your life. It also shows that you may need to pray and ask God to change your desires.

All in all, all of us need to be imitators of Jesus. We need to open our Bibles and see how Jesus lived. When we do this we see how Jesus responded to those who hated him, we see how he was both just and merciful. We will also learn that Jesus was a true prayer warrior and one that sought to always do the Father’s will. As you read about Christ and His character, examine your own life while simultaneously asking God to reveal areas of your life that need to be put under his submission. Then, as you desires and actions change you can look at others and say, imitate me as I imitate Christ!
