To the Immature Christian - Hebrews 5:12

By Pastor J.J. | September 09, 2026
Key Verse: Hebrews 5:12

“For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food.”

I’m sure all of us know someone who doesn’t act their age. They simply just refuse to grow up. A simple way to characterize that person is to call them immature. While immature people get on our nerves they are no where near the problem of immature Christians, and unfortunately, there are probably more immature Christians then there are immature people. What is an immature Christian? I believe the author of Hebrews characterizes them quite well when he says, “For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you someone someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God.” In a nutshell that is an immature Christian. He or she is the person that has been a believer for a very time, so long in fact that they should be teaching Sunday school, leading prayer group, and discipling others. However, because of their refusal to allow the Holy Spirit to work in their mind and heart, they are still babes of the faith. They still need someone to teach the basics of theology, and the basics of Christian living. The author says they need milk, not solid food. What would you think if you saw a forty year old men living off milk? Well to start off you be astounded. You would probably think that something was wrong with him. Thats what its like to be a Christian for years, but still be a babe. It’s as if something is wrong with you. How do you grow up?

An immature Christian grows in their faith by applying the Word of God to their life. While knowledge is certainly a part of spiritual maturity, so too is living like Christ. The mature Christian reads and applies the Word of God to their life. They grow in their knowledge of Christ and in their Christlikeness. Will you do what it takes to grow today?! We don’t need more immature Christians!
