Key Verse: Zephaniah 1:6 “Those who have turned back from following the Lord, and have not sought the Lord nor inquired of Him.” The prophetic book Zephaniah is often an overlooked book. Despite this is has great application for our lives. The book has two primary themes: the judgment of God, and God’s deliverance of His people. Here in the first chapter, we see that God is coming to destroy the entire earth as we know it. He says that He will out man and beast. He then transitions and begins to describe the type of people that He will utterly destroy. He says that all those who worship false gods, swear oaths using His name, and then he says something very interesting in V.6 which is our key verse for today. He also says that all those who have turned back from following the Lord will be destroyed as well. He then tells us two of the quickest and easiest ways to recognize someone who has turned back from the Lord. They are those who do not seek after God, nor do they inquire of Him. This means that they are no longer concerned with God’s will or plan for their life. They don’t seek His direction, they just go their own way. God says that these people will face His wrath. We know that we who are truly saved cannot lose our salvation since we live under the new covenant. However, we should always examine ourselves to make sure that we are of the faith (2 Corinthians 13:5). If we examine our lives and we have turned away from God and consciously living in sin with no desire to change, and we are not seeking His Will or direction then we actually not be saved. Those who turn back will be judged! Going to church does not save us, good works do not save us, but they are fruits of our salvation. If your lives are not characterized by the fruits of the Spirit, a love for God’s Word, and a love for God’s people you may not be saved! Make sure that you have not turned back today!
