Have you ever met someone

who just couldn’t make their mind up concerning anything? It seems that every time they make a decision they change their mind multiple times. If you read the books of 1 Samuel - 2 Chronicles you will find that the children of Israel were always doing this. They would worship God for a while, then they would worship Baal or some other god for a while. This went on for hundreds of years. Here in 1 Kings 18, the prophet Elijah calls them out for their constantly changing mind. He tells them to choose one and worship one. This is right it before he calls on the Lord and the Lord sends fire down from heaven and consumes the offering and proves that the Lord of Israel is the one true God. Many of the people in Israel wanted God and the world at the same time. They wanted to have God’s favor, and the pleasures of the world and this often led them to worship idols. 

I believe that there are many Christians who are a lot like Israel in this story. We may not be worshipping a false god one day and God the next, but we are constantly wavering concerning our devotion to God. For a few weeks we are really committed to God, we are studying our Bibles, we are praying, we are at church every time the doors are open, we are constantly battling the devil in spiritual warfare and maybe we are volunteering to serve at our church. Then just a few short weeks later everything changes. We haven’t opened our Bibles for weeks, our prayers are shallow, we are consistently giving into sin, we have gotten into the habit of missing church, and we have stopped volunteering to serve at our church. How did this happen? Maybe we blame it on marital problems, struggles at work, stress, anxiety, vacation, or a number of things. However, the truth of the matter is that are wavering in our devotion to God. Elijah told Israel that it was time to make a decision and stick with it. The same is true for our life. If we love God then let us be fully devoted to Him by daily submitting ourselves to Him and His desires. Devotion to God starts with submission to God! We can’t have God and the world. It’s time to choose. I pray that you will choose God and submit yourself to Him daily!
