Key Verse: Psalm 62:8

“Trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us.”

David’s life was full of trials. Some of them were of his own making and some were not. Like many of us, David often didn’t understand why some things happened to him. However, despite not always having the answers to why certain trials happened, David made a commitment to wait on the Lord for deliverance. Not only did He commit to waiting on the Lord for salvation, he also said he would silently wait on the Lord. Oftentimes we could use more silence in our life when facing trials. Sometimes it is our own reactions, and emotions that blind us to seeing what God is actually doing. Other times it is our anger, and questions that lead us to doubt. However, David does not say we should be quiet and never tell God how we really feel. In verse 8, he writes that we must trust Him at all times. This means that we must commit to trusting God no matter what before we pour out our hearts before Him. This makes sense because all throughout out the book of Psalms we see David pouring out His heart before God, at times even questioning God. However, this was always done after David had committed to trust God and wait on Him no matter what. After we have committed to trust God no matter what, THEN we are ready to pour our hearts out before him. Pouring out your heart to God means telling God exactly how you feel about the trial you are going through. If you feel abandoned, tell Him. If you feel angry, tell Him. If you feel hopeless, tell Him. Tell God exactly how you feel in the midst of your current trial. The reason we must commit to trusting Him and the reason we should poor out our heart to Him is because He is our refuge.

A refuge is a place of safety, a place that you can go to in the midst of a storm. In this case the refuge is not a mountain cabin, or a storm shelter. It’s actually not a place at all. It’s a person, and His name is God almighty. He is our place of refuge, our place to run too when the trial seems to great, when the storm is too strong. We can trust Him, and cry out to Him and He will be our safe place. Our rock in the midst of the life’s great storms. Friends, I know that some of you reading this are going through trials. You feel angry, abandoned, and like David you just don’t know why God allowed this. I implore you to commit to trusting God no matter what, and then pour your heart out to Him. When you do this you open the door the safest refuge in the universe. You find yourself in the arms of God, and He will hold you until the storm passes!
