Key Verse: Proverbs 4:23 “Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.” As people we are prone to worry about certain things. We worry about what we are going to eat, where we are going to work, what outfit we are going to wear for the day, where we will go to college, etc. We are thinkers, and oftentimes we become worriers. The sad truth is that we often choose to think on things that really don’t matter. We spend hours thinking about TV shows, friends, and our hobbies, but here in Proverbs 4, we see that there is something else we should spend our time thinking about. Solomon reminds us that we must keep our heart with all diligence. What does this mean? It means that we should constantly be thinking about the status and health of our heart. The author is not talking about the physical health of your heart, rather he is talking about the heart as the central core of who you are, the seat of your emotions. We must make sure that our heart is not growing wicked by beginning to desire the ways of the world. We should always keep an eye on our spiritual health. We have to make sure that we are consistently allowing God to transform our hearts, and purge our hearts of wickedness. Why is it so important to keep our heart pure? Because out of our heart come all the issues of our life. Our heart is truly what sets the trajectory of our life. It is out of heart that come our dreams, visions, and goals for life. If our heart is corrupt, selfish, and worldly then our goals for our life will be worldly and not God honoring. Most of what we deal with in this life goes back to our heart. Therefore we must make sure our heart remains pure, seeking God and His will. Only then can we live a life that truly honors God.
