Key Verse: Ephesians 5:1 “Therefore be imitators of God as dear children.”Here in the letter to the church at Ephesus Paul commands the Christians there to be imitators of God. This means they are are to model their behavior after the character of God. Notice what Paul adds here in this verse, “as dear children.” Why did he add this? He added this because a child will imitate nearly everything they see their parents do. Not only that, they will imitate it with excitement. When you ask a young boy who they want to be like when they grow up, most of them will respond with, “I want to be just like my dad.” Children eagerly desire to imitate their parents. Paul also wants us to eagerly desire to be more like God! However, what is God’s character? What is God like? There are many Bible verses throughout the pages of Scripture that give us a look at God’s character, but the the best place to look if one wishes to see what God is like is to simply look at Jesus. The author of Hebrews tells us that Jesus is the express image of His person. This means that Jesus perfectly shows us the character of God. Jesus is God! What was Jesus like? Jesus was loving, patient, kind, honest, joyful, peaceful, and so much more. If you really want to know the type of person Jesus was you need to go read Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. They all tell His story and show us what His character is! We cannot imitate Jesus if we don’t know what He is like! Go and study one of the gospels, and learn about the awesome character of our God! Then get excited about being like Him, and model your behavior after Him just like a child does with a parent! Imitate Jesus today!
