Key Verses Hebrews 4:12-13

“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even the to division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is discerner of the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.”

Last week we learned that God’s Word is sharp. It is something far more fearsome than a judge’s sentence or the sword of the executioner. Now we will see that the word of God also sees as we really are. In life we can fool a lot of people. We can fool our spouse, our parents, our teachers, and our boss. We can lie, cheat, and hide our true motives and intentions. However, we cannot hide our heart from God. Just as God looked at David’s heart not his outward appearance when God chose him to be king, God is also capable of seeing our heart. He sees all of our thoughts, and desires. It is safe to say that God knows you better than you know yourself. This is what we learn through the last description of the Word of God in Hebrews 4:12. The NKJV says that it is a discerner of the thoughts and desires of the heart. It is easy to misunderstand the idea behind the text with this translation. The CSB translates it as, “able to judge.” This is a better translation as it helps us see that nothing is hidden from God. Through His Word, the Bible, God whom already knows our thoughts and desires is able to clearly show us our thoughts and desires. This is why when you read the Bible you oftentimes feel guilt or a desire to change when you finish your reading for the day. God is using His Word, the stories, the commandments, and even the poetry to judge your desires and show you where you are falling short. By doing this, we are also reminded that God sees and all knows us all. We can hide nothing from Him. V.13 reminds us of this.

Take a few moments this morning to allow the Word of God to cut you deep, to show you who you really are. Your sins that you think are secret, they aren’t. The intentions you thinks no one knows about, God does. Take a few moments today and allow His Word to change you. The Word of God is awesome! Cherish it, and let it do its job!
