Key Verses: Colossians 3:2-3

“Set your mind on the things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.”

Proper action begins with proper thinking. If we wish to live a godly life we must focus on godly things. The old saying, you are what you think is very true. Paul also understood this truth and reminded the Colossian Christians that they must focus on the things above. What does Paul mean by the things above? He is referring to everything that is heavenly, and from God. This would include our future eternal life in heaven, the characteristics of Christ, the will and plan of God for our lives and so much more. The problem many of us have is that we set our minds on earthly things. We focus on things such as money, material possessions, popularity and other trivial things that really don’t matter. When we focus on trivial things it gives the devil a way to slip in our life and destroy us with temptation and sin. Why should we focus on heavenly things? Why does Paul feel comfortable giving us this command? Because we died. What does this mean?

It means that through our faith in the death and resurrection of Christ we have died with Christ. We have died to this world and the desires of this world. As a result we are now called to focus on the world we are alive too. That is the heavenly world. We are to focus on living for Jesus each and every day.
