Key Verses: Isaiah 57:20-21

“But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt. “There is no peace,” says my God “for the wicked.”

Have you ever wondered why it seems that so many wicked people prosper? Sometimes it seems that the more one is the more wealth, status, and power that person will have. Despite wealth, status, and power there is one thing in particular that the wicked never have. God through the pen of Isaiah characterizes the life and fate of the wicked to a troubled sea. There are few things more scary then the ocean when a storm is brewing. The waves are big, the water becomes murky, and if you are in a boat on a troubled sea you become afraid. A storm on the ocean is the complete opposite of peaceful. It is chaos. God says that the life of wicked is just like this. They have no true peace, and the sin they commit complicates their life and leads to a life with zero tranquility. Just as stormy sea churns the bottom of the ocean resulting in murky water, their life is characterized by purposelessness and problems. In V.37, God says they have no peace. The life of the wicked may seem appealing at first glance, but in their heart they have no peace.

True peace only comes from knowing God through a personal relationship with Christ through faith in his death and resurrection. The next step to a peaceful life is by obeying the commands of Christ. Nowhere in Scripture does it promise the faithful to Christ wealth, health and prosperity, but we are promised peace in the storms of life, and eternal peace in heaven. The wicked have neither of these. They drift aimlessly on the stormy sea, and they have no eternal peace with God. Check your heart this morning, and make sure that you are valuing peace over prosperity!
