True and False Worship - Isaiah 66:1-2

By Pastor J.J. | January 09, 2026
Key Verses: Isaiah 66:1-2

“Thus says the Lord: “Heaven is My throne, and earth is my footstool. Where is the house that that you will build Me? And where is the place of My rest? For all those things My hand has made, and all those things exist,” says the Lord. “But on this one will I look: On him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, and who trembles at my Word.”

Many Christians are guilty of thinking that God needs them. Sometimes we look at our gifts and our talents and we grow arrogant in believing that God needs what we have to offer. This attitude also leads us to believe that God owes us something. When I read Isaiah 66 it seems that this attitude had grown prevalent in the land of Israel. They thought that since they had built God a temple, and offered Him sacrifices that they had earned God’s favor and that God needed them. In the first two verses God reminds them that He doesn’t. He reminds them as well as us that He is the Creator. How could they ever hope to build him anything that He actually needs. God needs nothing they have to offer. Despite this, God says that there is one thing that truly pleases Him. It is the person who is poor in their spirit, it is the person who is broken over their sin, it is the person that fears the righteous hand of God.

Church no matter how gifted we are God does not need us. He does not need our worship, our service, our preaching, our acts of love, He doesn’t need any of it. If we didn’t worship God then God would have the rocks cry out in worship. We need to understand that God doesn’t need anything we have to offer. He desires it, but He does not need. What do I offer that God actually needs. Nothing at all! All that I have to offer God is a broken heart over my sin, an understanding of how desperately I need Him. That is all I have to offer. The awesome thing is that is all God truly wants. True worship is not giving God something He needs, it is giving God something He desires, and He desires that we hate our sin, desperately desire Him, and fear Him. That is real worship! Remember today that God don’t need you! He wants to use you, but if you grow arrogant, and sinful He can use someone else! You aren’t irreplaceable. Be broken over your sin, desire Him, and fear Him. That is the type of person God acknowledges.
