Key Verse: Ephesians 5:11 

 

“And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.” 

 

What am I exposing myself to on a regular basis? Who am I fellowshipping with? These are two questions that Christians should often ask themselves. As we ask these questions, and give honest answers we can discover areas in our life which require repentance. We can also learn how the devil is tempting us! Here in Ephesians 5, Paul reminds us that fellowship with sin leads to sin! He write that the Christian should have absolutely no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness. This does not mean that we go hideaway in the mountains and never leave. Rather his idea is that we do not associate ourselves or get comfortable around these unfruitful works of darkness. What does he mean when he says they are unfruitful? These works are the opposite of the fruits of the spirit. These dark wicked deeds do not promote the spiritual fruits of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, and self control. Rather they lead those who are exposed to these bad actions to actually commit bad actions! It matters what we expose ourselves too! Instead of exposing ourselves to these terrible actions, instead we are expose them! What does this mean? 

 

It means that as Christians it is our job to call evil exactly what it is, evil. There are far too many Christians who in hopes of being accepted by the culture refuse to call sin what it is! It is rebellion against God! It is evil! So many of us are guilty of accepting sin as normal and ok, instead of actively exposing it for what it is! Before we can have the courage and integrity to call out the sin we see in our culture, we first must have the honesty to call out the sin in our own lives. Take a few minutes today and examine your life. What sin have you allowed yourself to grow comfortable around? Is it cursing? Lust? Jealousy? Bitterness? If we have become comfortable with these sins its just a matter of time until we begin to commit these sins. Maybe some of us already are. If you are, then repent of it, and stop being comfortable around it! Once you do this, then you will have the courage and integrity to call out the sin and evil in our society!
