Key Verse: Jeremiah 20:9 

“Then I said, I will not make mention of Him, nor speak anymore in His name. But His word was in my heart like a burning fire shut up in my bones; I was weary of holding it back, and I could not.” 

I have been reading through Jeremiah during my daily quiet time and this morning I came upon one of my favorite verses in the entire book. Jeremiah had been suffering in his ministry. He had just recently been beaten and thrown in jail, people mock him, and no one heeds the words God speaks through him. Jeremiah was discouraged. He depressed, and in his lowest moment he decided that he would just stop preaching. He thought that he would go and get a different career. However, something else happened. He says that God’s Word was in His heart and it was like a fire shut up in his bones. Even though Jeremiah wanted to quit, even through he wanted to be angry at God and abandon his calling, he just couldn’t. God was at work in his life, and he saw the goodness of God and felt God pushing him forward even in his darkest day. 

Friends, in our life we will have hard days. We will better depression, anxiety, loneliness and even perhaps persecution for our faith. Despite this we must remain faithful to God. Jeremiah had a close walk with God, and he undoubtedly spent much time in the Scriptures and prayer. As a result of this God’s Word was setting His heart ablaze to serve Him and speak His message. If we walk close with God the same exact thing will happen in our own life. We will find ourselves speaking of His goodness, praising His name, and telling of His saving power even on our dark days. I want to challenge you to make this verse both your prayer and commitment to the Lord. We should pray that God’s Word sets ablaze our heart in such a way that even in the darkest day we proclaim His goodness! Will you pray that today?
