Key Verse: Proverbs 13:20 

“He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will be destroyed.” 

God created us as humans to desire fellowship and companionship. The greatest fellowship we experience is our daily walk with God through the Holy Spirit. The second greatest fellowship and companionship we have is that we experience with our spouse. However, this does not mean that we shouldn’t pursue friendship with others. In the Bible there are many stories of friendships. There is David and Jonathan, David and Samuel, and Paul with the many ministry friends he had. Friendship is important, but even more so if the type of friends we have. In Proverbs 13:20 Solomon reminds us of the importance of choosing our friends wisely. Here we are reminded that the person who walk as among the wise will be wise. This means that those we have wise friends will eventually become wise. This illustrates the truth that we become who we hang around. WE need to be careful in choosing our friends. Because while it is true that if we walk daily with wise people we become wise, it is also true that if we walk with fools, we will become a fool If we hand around with people who use bad language, gossip, and lust, we too will eventually indulge in their foolish behavior. Solomon actually tells us what happens to those who have foolish friends. He says that the one who is a friend of fools will be destroyed. How will that person be destroyed? What does that mean? It means that the person who is a friend of fools will likely destroy their own life through foolish behavior, but it may also mean that this person will face destruction from the hand of God. God will cast the fool, since fool often describes the ungodly or unsaved person, into hell. They will face eternal destruction! 

Church, we must examine our friend group. Are you walking among the wise? Or are you walking with fools? One will lead to living skillful life that brings God glory, the other will lead to destruction. Choose your friends wisely!
