Key Verse: Genesis 2:3 

“Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.” 

Yesterday at a pastor’s prayer meeting with several other pastors in our area we talked a lot about the need for a sabbath. The idea behind ‘a sabbath’ day really comes from this verse of Scripture here. Unfortunately throughout the Old and New Testament people took the Sabbath day and turned it into a day of legalism. A day where one could do nothing but attend worship, and lay around and sleep all day. God never intended the Sabbath day, to be that type of day. Rather God wanted the Sabbath day to be a day where people found rest and were as a result rejuvenated to work hard and serve Him for the rest of the week. That is the reason why God originally rested on the seventh day. He didn’t rest because He was tired. God never actually gets tired! He rested to leave us an example to follow! We all need a day of the week where we rest from work. The work I am referring to here is our job. We need rest from punching the time clock, working in the factory, running our own business or whatever it is that we do for a living. 

On that day, we need to find rest in Jesus first of all. That looks like choosing to spend time in God’s Word and prayer. It also should be a day where do something that brings us mental rest. For some that is taking the boat to fish, going hunting, playing golf, taking a hike, watching a movie, reading a book, or even playing a video game. These things help us relax and they give life. For most people the best day to make your rest day is Sunday. We all need rest, and we all need a Sabbath. This week I want to challenge you to take a day to rest from whatever your actual job is. Spend extra time in the Word of God and prayer, then find something you enjoy doing and do it!! By doing this you will better serve God throughout the week at your workplace because you got reenergized through rest!
